Each year, we evaluate nearly 800 hospitals around the country to evaluate their performance in treating patients with challenging heart conditions, such as advanced cardiovascular disease, heart transplants, implantation of cardiac devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators, endocarditis and circulatory issues.
Hospitals are evaluated based on Patient Outcomes (how well patients recovered), Hospital Structure (resources and technologies) and Process (how well the hospital follows the best standards of care).
Specifically, hospitals’ performance is assessed on factors such as:
- 30-day survival
- Patient satisfaction
- The proportion of patients discharged home after treatment (rather than going to another care facility)
- The complexity of the diagnoses being treated
- The quality and level of nurse staffing
- Advanced programs and technologies, such as transplant programs
- Patient services, such as cardiac rehabilitation and hospice
- Other measures of care
You can also assess a hospital’s performance in specific cardiac procedures, such as:
- Abdominal aortic aneurysm repair
- Aortic valve replacement surgery
- Cardiac bypass surgery
- Congestive heart failure
- Heart attack
- Transcatheter aortic valve repair, or TAVR
